I see from the instructions that Ubiquiti has made a modification that prevents some newer models from being used -  the "XW" issue. There was another statement that the issue was being worked  - but no status was given. Has this issue been resolved yet?

M2's are 2.4 GHz.  M5's are 5 GHz.  The plain old M2HP's and M5HP's I have been buying off of Amazon work like a charm with the 3.0.x firmware.

I am also interested in hearing more about this.  Locally it seems 5 GHz is the way to go, less crowding and noise.  And around Christmas 2014 we started to see the XW problem with stuff we were ordering.

I think I already know the answer lies in the underlying OpenWRT support:

But it would still be nice to have one of the developers chime in on the matter.

I am not a developer but I beta test most of the firmware before it is released. I have not seen Broadband- Hamnet firmware for XW devices yet.

The core team is aware of the progress the OpenWRT community has made regarding XW. It looks like their leading edge versions can support XW.  The current firmware is based on Attitude Adjustment and will need to be moved to Barriar Breaker or beyond for XW. 

It is being worked on but will take a while. There are a lot of demands on the time of the Volunteers working on this.

I have two NanoBeam M2's just waiting for the firmware to be available. I was one of the first people to get bit by XW.

I was able to get M5 XM hardware by calling a distributor and asking for old stock. I am not sure that is still an option.

I've recently joined building up a mesh network in the Ottawa/Ont/Can area, which includes

We use a variety of Ubitquiti Airmax M products on 2.4 and 5.8GHz: Loco M2 and M5,
Bullet M2 and Nanobeam M5 (which I understand used to be called Nanobridge before a product
renaming which causes some confusion...)

We also use some WRT54s but find them limited in performance/function. Services on the mesh
also use Raspberry Pi's with WFii dongles and others.

Specifically regarding the new H/W issue for Ubiquiti: which hardware is known to be
affected by the XW/XM issue...I gather so far Nanobeam M5 and NanoStation M5/Loco M5,
(and M2?) are there others we should know about?

OK, has anyone been able to correlate serial numbers/ranges (or slight model number
differences) between old and new hardware? That might help us determine if we can still
obtain old hardware before the point of ordering, unpacking, and powering up units; while
firmware updates are pending we can carry on in a limited sense.

I don't know about serial numbers, as I have never seen that disclosed in the ads.  But if you go by AirOS version, it needs to be 5.5.7 or before.

Airmax M products of the same hardware version i.e.for XM or XW?

If it's possible to get serial number correlation between old and new devices, a co-operative
distributer could check against their stock before shipping; maybe not all of their units, but
enough to indicate what's coming (or to not ship). It's an option to just go ahead and order and
hope for the best either way, knowing that newer versions will be supported sometime soon
though it may not work out for immediate needs.

I'm not suggesting people post exact S/Ns but if we can figure out a range/pattern...
